Bauer is not the only villain on the scene

Author: Stephen Brook

For detractors, the situation is clear. Bauer Media, the German publisher, has not just taken over the local magazine industry, it has wrecked it.

The company, which bought Australian Consolidated Press, home of The Australian Women’s Weekly for $600 million, in 2012 and Pacific Magazines, home of New Idea, for $40 million this month, has come in for heavy criticism.

It has been viciously attacked for its perceived failings, its relentless cost-cutting, unkind treatment of staff, failure to understand Australia, and denounced as a company run by a bunch of clueless people who failed to understand what women really want.
